BIOGRAPHy

Jaq Belcher is an Australian-born contemporary artist who lives and works in Harlem, NYC. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and her Master's from the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts. Belcher is renowned for her intricate and elegant cut paper works that explore various states of being.

Belcher's technique includes processes of reduction and repetition by which she manipulates the very essence of matter. She sees the white expanse of a sheet of paper as a beautiful void and cutting as a way of subtracting from the void in order to produce shapes, images, and ideas. For Belcher, cutting is a meditative process that fosters and requires stillness. Her art is a recording of time and the seeds of potential.
